Gary Comer and my family go way back. First, they knew each other from the neighborhood. Being that I am related to Gary Comer uplifts my entrepreneurial spirit. It’s in the blood! My known grandparents married and moved into the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Gary Comer attended Paul Revere Elementary school located on the corner. Myself along with the next 4 generations of family members attended Paul Revere Elementary School.
He left his job to start a business. He wanted financial freedom and for his children to inherit something. He wanted to create generational wealth for his family. He wanted to build something that was bigger than him. He knew a secret. He understood the only way to obtain his goals and dreams would be to take a leap of faith. After taking the leap, he founded Land’s End, a mail order clothing retailer. He grew Land’s End to a billion dollar company once Sears bought it. He came back to his neighborhood to build new homes, youth centers and gave scholarships. He donated millions of dollars to Paul Revere Elementary School. He gave more than $85 million to expand University of Chicago hospital. It is now named Comer Children’s Hospital. This hospital is where most women and children from his neighborhood gives birth and receives medical care.
